Taxi drivers and cabs are a lot of help when in a foreign destination.  They can make  your life easier and more  convenient.  Taxi drivers can easily identify whether you are a traveler or not. Remember that whether you are  in a local or foreign taxi, you should consider your safety and security. If you are in a foreign country, it would be safer to check and look for proper identifications.  Determine if the cab is from a licensed company. Look for a taxi stand.   By the time that you reached the airport, find taxi stands. Refrain from getting a cab at anywhere, since there may be individuals to approach you to ride on their taxi.  You can ask the security where the taxi stands are.  Through this, you can make sure that you will be dealing with licensed drivers and company.  You can make sure that you would be billed fairly.

Check for the taxi meter.  Having a taxi meter is one of the indications that you are  dealing with a legitimate taxi.  Some drivers  may just ask to agree to a certain fare.  Even if you agreed, you can still ask him to turn on the taximeter just to check if it is close  to the fare that you negotiated with. Still, it is better to rely on the taxi meter.

Determine the estimate.  If you are in a foreign country, using their currency, it would be quite difficult to guess how much your fare will be. Before going out, ask a local, a waiter or a hotel staff about the estimated fare.  At least, you can prevent being  cheated.  You may also consider negotiating with a specific price, based on the information that you were provided.  Make sure that you do offer a fair fare for these people are also working  for a living.

Have an idea about your destination.  Though you feel strange, avoid looking disoriented.  Research for important  landmarks and  routes, so that the driver will not think that you know nothing.  You  can also ask the locals before you get in the cab.
