Enjoy Some Quiet and Alone Time When in NYC

Gorge on Sugar at Veniero’s Pastry Shop

The United States is the land of excess, and let’s face it, it’s not a place where you are going to have a hard time indulging a sweet tooth. But not all of the places that serve up sweet treats are equal, and we think that you only deserve the best. That’s why Veniero’s Pastry Shop needs to become etched into your brain. This is a traditional Italian bakery that opened way back in 1894, and it’s the Italian staples like cannolis, biscottis, and tiramisu that locals, whether Italian or not, keep coming back for.

Read a Book in Greenacre Park

When you think of green spaces in New York, your mind will probably wander to images of Central Park and horse and carriage rides, but actually there are many more green spaces in the city, and Greenacre Park is one of the hidden gems. This park covers only a 7th of an acre, but in that space there is a waterfall, and a charming outdoor cafĂ©. It’s the perfect place to while away a Spring Sunday in New York with a great book.

Immerse Yourself in Nostalgia at the Museum of the American Gangster

If you can’t get enough of movies like Goodfellas and Scarface, you’ll be well acquainted with the idea of the American gangster. But while these are excellent stories, the world of the American gangster extends way beyond fiction, and a place where you can get to grips with this underworld is at the Museum of the American Gangster, which you can find in Manhattan’s East Village. Located in a former speakeasy, it’s particularly great for learning about crime and gangsters in the Prohibition era.

Discover a World of Rum at Van Brunt Stillhouse

In the 19th century, Brooklyn was a major hub for distilleries producing whiskey, gin, and rum, but when the Prohibition era kicked in, all of that changed. Only recently have the distillery licenses dropped in price, which means there is a brand new culture of distilling alcohol in the New York borough. One of the most celebrated of these distilleries in Van Brunt Stillhouse, which is one of few that has a focus on making its own rum. Be sure to book in advance for a tour, but you can pop in at any time for a cocktail or two.

Ireland is the Perfect Venue for "Me" Time

Expand Your Palette With a Horse Meat Sandwich

Have you ever felt so hungry that you could have eaten a horse? Well, would you be prepared to take the phrase literally? That’s right, over at Paddy Jack in Temple Bar they serve up horsemeat sandwiches. It is a controversial choice, that is without a doubt, but the horse steak baguettes fly out the door, so there has to be something nice about them right? If you’re a food adventurer, you should most definitely add this to your Dublin bucket list!

Go Fishing on the Easkey River

If your idea of the perfect trip away is sitting on the edge of a river for days on end with your fishing rod in the water, Ireland is the ultimate travel destination for you, and you need to become acquainted with the Easkey River. There are copious numbers of salmon and sea trout in these clean waters, and the best time for fishing is in the spring and summer months. You might just catch yourself dinner.

Get Artsy at the National Gallery of Ireland

If you have an interest in the visual arts, the National Gallery of Ireland should be right at the top of your “must visit” list on a trip to Dublin. The impressive museum holds over 15,000 items, and you’ll be able to find paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, and more inside. There are works from all over Europe, including art work from Monet, Caravaggio, and Rembrandt. This is also a budget conscious way to spend an afternoon as the audio guides that will take you around the museum’s permanent collection are totally free.

Walk Out to Inishkeel Island

Just off the coast of County Donegal, you can find an island called Inishkeel island, and at low tide a tidal bank is created so that you can actually walk across to the island. This isn’t just a quaint thing to do, the island is actually fascinating, and houses the ruins of a 6th century ancient Christian settlement. You can also discover the ruins on two churches and a graveyard. Just be sure to make it off the island while the tidal bank still exists!

Feel Dublin’s Creativity at the Irish Design Shop

Dublin is definitely one of the most traditional capital cities in the world, and most people don‘t visit the city for its cutting edge design, but this is not to say that Dublin doesn’t have a creative scene. It most certainly does, and you can feel the force of that incredible creative spirit at the Irish Design Shop. It is the ideal place to go souvenir shopping for something that’s a little out of the ordinary, and you’ll find original works in ceramics, textiles, glassware, jewellery, and furniture from up and coming designers around the country.

Make Your NYC Trip Fun and Lively

Stock Up on Sweets at Economy Candy

If you are travelling with kids, or you just happen to be a big kid yourself, we know somewhere that might just send you giddy with joy, and that’s Economy Candy. This might just be the most seriously sugary spot that we’ve ever seen. With a history that dates back to 1937, Economy Candy is an NYC institution, selling candies that are both vintage and modern. Just be sure to pace yourself with all of that sugar!

Watch an Outrageous Art Show at Gowanus Ballroom

A night out at the opera or at Carnegie Hall is never going to be a bad thing, but these kind of established venues only show one side of New York, and this has always been a city that has existed on the cutting edge. If you fancy catching a performance that is totally Avant Garde, Gowanus Ballroom will be more up your alley. This is an alternative arts space in Brooklyn that has garnered a reputation as a place where you can see outrageous shows from up and coming performance artists.

Indulge a Vintage Lover at Brooklyn Flea

As you walk along the streets of Brooklyn, you’ll be in doubt that you have found yourself in Hipsterville where a lot of attention is paid to wearing awesome threads. If you’d like to take back a little bit of the Brooklyn vibe with you, a trip to the weekly Brooklyn Flea is definitely in order. You’ll find a treasure trove of vintage clothing, but if that’s not your thing, you’ll also find antiques, collectables, and a huge street food area where you can chow down.

Have an Art Filled Day at the Guggenheim Museum

The Guggenheim is one of the best known art museums anywhere in the world. It opened all the way back in 1939 with Solomon R. Guggenheim’s private collections, and since then has expanded to contain an incredible variety of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and contemporary art. With works from the likes of Paul Klee, Picasso, Chagall, and Miro, this is truly an art lover’s paradise.

Eat Latin American Grub at Red Hook Food Vendors

The Red Hook Food Vendors Marketplace is a Brooklyn institution, and it’s where the Latin community of New York gathers to eat the really authentic dishes from Latin America. If it’s good enough for Latino locals, it’s certainly good enough for us, and some of the delicious bites you might stumble upon include elotes, hulks of corn covered in mayo, cheese, lime and chilli, huaraches, massive tortillas slathered in meat and cheese, and plantain chips. The trucks are open on weekends between April and October.

Suggested Bucketlist When Travelling to Malaysia

Get Close to Turtles in Cherating

One of the most special things that you can do in Malaysia is get really close to some of the wildlife, and in Malaysia you can do better than seeing animals in cages in zoos. The Turtle Wildlife Sanctuary in Cherating is a place to get close to turtles in a natural habitat. Something very special about this place is their camping facilities. Turtles are more active at night time, so camping will give you the chance to see them hatching from eggs, and landing on the rockeries.

Hike up Penang Hill

When you are on the island of Penang, there are tonnes of cultural experiences, particularly in the Georgetown area, but that is not the beginning and end of the Penang experience, and if you are something of an adventurer you can also enjoy some hiking up Penang hill, which also contains local botanic gardens and many areas of natural beauty.

Visit the Buddhist Temple Complex of Kek Lok Si

Although Malaysia is a Muslim country, this doesn’t mean that you can’t find other religious buildings around the country, and some very impressive ones at that. The Kek Lok Si temple is the largest Buddhist temple in all of Malaysia, located on the island of Penang. This is a spectacularly impressive temple with a seven story pagoda that features 10,000 alabaster and bronze statues of the Buddha.

Tuck Into Traditional Malaysian Laksa

One of the highlights of any trip to Malaysia is the food, and perhaps the most famous of all Malaysian food is laksa. You can pretty much find it in all local restaurants in every town and city across the country, so there really is no excuse not to slurp on lots of it. If you are unfamiliar with laksa, it’s a hearty bowl of rice noodle soup that is flavoured with a spicy coconut based broth, and inside you’ll typically find shrimp, cockles, and sometimes chicken.

Hit a Few Golf Balls at the Royal Selangor Golf Club

Yes, there is lots to see and explore while in Malaysia, but there might be some times that you simply want to relax and unwind by hitting up a golf course, and you have quite a few options while in Malaysia. One of the most renowned courses in the country is the Royal Selangor Golf Club, and since it dates back to 1893 it’s one of the oldest golf clubs to be found anywhere in Asia. (www.rsgc.com.my)

Explore the Magnificent SG On Your Next Holiday Tour

Explore the Gardens By the Bay

While there is certainly a lot of concrete and many buildings and malls all over Singapore, there are some green spaces as well, and no doubt the most popular of these is the Gardens by the Bay, 250 acres of land next to the Marina Reservoir. There are many different gardens to explore, so whether you want to stroll through a cloud forest, a rainforest, or a Mediterranean landscape, there will be something for you.

Say Hi to Sea Animals at the South East Asian Aquarium

Southeast Asia is home to an incredible amount of wildlife, but you shouldn’t forget about all the incredible sea creatures that exist in the oceans of the region. If you don’t fancy something quite as adventurous as scuba diving, you can still get up close to many sea animals at Singapore’s South East Asian aquarium. Inside, there’s more than 100,000 sea animals from 800 species, including hammerhead sharks, moray eels, fire shrimp, and more.

Learn Something New at the Asian Civilizations Museum

Singapore may be a small country, but it has some of the best museums to be found anywhere in Asia in our opinion, and one of the museum highlights is the Asian Civilizations Museum. This is one of the pioneering museums of pan-Asian culture, specialising in the material history of China, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. Highlights from the collection include Chinese porcelain, Burmese Buddhist art, and Peranakan gold.

Take in the Views With a Cocktail at Lantern Bar

When you’re in Singapore on a Friday night, and you would like to have a relaxed drink somewhere that has a killer view, you can’t do much better than Lantern Bar. This gorgeous rooftop bar sits on top of the Fullerton Bay Hotel, and as you sip on cocktails you’ll have an amazing view of the Marina Bay and its nightly light show. The rooftop also has a pool and a sundeck if you would like to top up your tan in the daytime.

Chow Down on Chilli Crab at Hua Yu Wee Seafood

When in Singapore, it’s time to eat and eat and then eat some more. One of the most scrumptious local dishes is called Chilli Crab, which consists of a fresh catch of crab that is coated in a sweet, spicy, and savoury tomato based sauce. There are plenty of places to chow down on this deliciousness, but we are particularly enamoured by Hua Wee Seafood, where the portion is generous and full of flavour.
