The world is
blessed with various pilgrimage sites for pious or fascinated traveler. From an
ancient holy city, centuries-old golden temple, and prehistoric enormous stones
on top of vast grassland. Religious destinations are not only appealing to
people of the same faith. It’s not difficult to appreciate the beauty and
cultural significance of various temples, structures, and architectures.
Machu Picchu, Peru.
Earning its place as one of the New 7 Wonders of the
world, Machu Picchu is built from incredibly unique stone facades
that make up the several hundred buildings in the sites and along with
terraces. Reaching Machu Picchu can be quite a challenging trail but it’s worth
your while once you experience this serene citadel.
Jerusalem, Israel.
The only non-Muslim country in the
Middle East where it’s
believed to be the birthplace and deathbed of Jesus Christ. This centuries-old
city is visited by at least two million travelers yearly. It’s the most
spiritually significant place in the world for Islam, Christianity, and
Judaism. The city is famous for Western Wall (a place for pilgrimage and place
of prayer for the Jews), Golgotha (the place where Jesus was crucified), and Dome
of the Rock (home of the famous Muslim shrine).
Vatican City,
Italy. The center of the Catholic world where up to five million people visits
annually. This holy city is filled with monuments erected to commemorate
various saints. It was also believed that this is the exact location where
Saint Peter took his last breath. Participating in a Mass celebrated by the
Pope himself is what most people look forward to when they visit Vatican.
Stonehenge,
England. It’s a prehistoric site that is famous for enormous stone monuments
dating back from the Neolithic and Bronze aged. The building process of these
gigantic rocks has puzzled archeologists if how the primitives were able to
pile them up without the use of modern equipment. Though the iconic Stonehenge
pictures only selection of stones, there were actually over 200 other
structures scattered all over the island which was set up at the same period as
well. Thousands of people from all over the globe travel to witness the sunrise
atop the majestic rocks.
Golden Temple,
India. Though it was a spiritual center for the Sikh religion, anyone of any
faith is welcome to join this popular pilgrimage site to find spiritual
comfort, to pray, or to simply learn about the temple’s history. This golden
façade temple was visited by 50,000 spectators every day. There aren’t really
formal tours set up around the majestic golden religious site. But the locals
will be very pleased to show you around.
Ulpotha, Sri Lanka.
It’s a retreat for meditative yoga gurus and treat for spa-lovers. Ulpotha is a
popular pilgrim for pious thousands of years ago and up to present. This place
is an incredible choice for anyone who’s up to for some soul-cleansing. Not to
mention, it has the best spa in the world. However, Ulpotha is only open at
certain times of the year.
